A fabulous set in original very fine highly decorated leather bindings the two volume set is superbly decorated , the spine with raised bands diced blind decoration to the compartments two marroon labels with gilt titles and vol numbers, front and rear boards with double gilt & blind rulings and patterned rulings a large blind stamped middle decoration and diced decoration , please ask for photographs marbled end papers & all edges. Old fine family book plate on fpd gift inscription on fep. Half tiltle with very foxed engraving, all plates have some greying or foxing to the margins not effecting the plates, Volume 1 has a b&w map of Ireland profusely illustrated all complete in both volumes, Slip case is relatively new but very well done with marbled boards. A rare early map of Ireland by the famous Blaeu family of Amsterdam possibly the most important cartographers of there time, centre fold with a fairly large but not heavy damp stain at the bottom, & small tear just above the cartouche, trimed close to the plate mark but still showing. A very fine cartouche and decorated milage scale, complete with a rural scene of two sheep and two young shepherds, surmounted by the Irish harp below a Royal Crown , a second cartouche is in the top right hand corner with the British heraldic shield showing the crests of England, Scotland, Wales, & Ireland flying the St Georges Cross flags with another Royal Crown. A handsome map with early or possibly contemporary hand fine colouring. Provenance= from the library of THE MACDERMOT , Prince of Connaught, Coolavin Co sligo who is named on the map. RARE. A scarce first edition second state ( page 123 line 17 visitor corrected to sister) 39 plates and frontis of young Charles sitting in a chair all ilustrated by Phiz, plates are foxed as is always the case. Spine divided into five compartments with small geometric snakelike design impressed into the brown leather as is commonly found on Cork bindings (we therefore believe this is a contemporary Irish binding) , black title label and gilt, marbled boards and endpapers, neat signature of a former owner on ep 625pp. A small hole within the top compartment does not detract from this handsome binding.
